Tips To Protect Your Skin From UV Rays

Sun-Smart Lifestyle: Incorporating Habits to Guard Your Skin from UV Exposure

What is UV Radiation?

UV, or ultraviolet radiation, is a type of non-ionizing electromagnetic energy that the sun provides to the earth as part of its entire spectrum of light. UV photons do not cause heat and are not visible to the naked eye. As a result, you might not even be aware of these radiations until it's too late!

The ozone layer, carbon dioxide, and water vapour in the atmosphere absorb the majority of the sun's UV energy. The sun's UVA and UVB rays mostly reach us.

UV radiation can cause accelerated ageing of the skin, wrinkles, age spots, leathery skin, and other issues. Overexposure to UV radiation weakens your immune system, making it more difficult for your skin to defend itself against foreign invaders.

1. Avoid The Sun

If the UV index is expected to be high, avoid or minimise being out in direct sunlight from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Even if you are in the shade, UV rays can reach your skin, so use sun protection.

2. Sunscreen Is Your Best Friend

If you must go out in the sun, use a water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen cream or lotion with an SPF of 30 or higher. Apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outside, and don't forget to reapply after a swim or if you've sweated a lot.

3. Cover It Up

To protect your skin from the sun, wear full-sleeved, denser-fabric clothing whenever possible. To protect your face and eyes from UV damage, wear wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses or spectacles with UV filters.

4. Ditch The Tanning Salon

UVC, the most harmful of the UV rays, can be emitted by tanning beds and sun lamps. To avoid damage to your skin and eyes, it's best to avoid them altogether.

5. Protect Your Kid

When it comes to small children, you should take extra precautions to limit their UV exposure. Children are in a constantly changing stage of development, and environmental stressors such as UV radiation can have a negative impact on their growth.

6. Choose Your Clothes Wisely

To protect your skin from UV rays, wear long-sleeved shirts and long skirts when going outside. Wear dark colours instead of light colours to protect yourself from the sun's harmful rays.

Wrapping Up :

UV rays are a type of radiation from the sun that reaches the earth's surface. UV rays are classified into different categories based on their wavelengths. They have varied levels of penetration and skin effects. While you cannot totally avoid the sun's UV rays, you may take the necessary precautions to reduce their harmful effects.
